Open Call - Tool Party #3: Live coding

HAU Hebbel am Ufer, with its three venues HAU1,HAU2 und HAU3 and the digital stage HAU4 is a pa-ragon of current artistic positions at the interface oftheatre, dance and performance. In addition, music, visual art and theoretical debates are a constant component of the wide-ranging programme.

Gefährliche Arbeit (Dangerous Work) is a queer-feminist network for FLINTA theater makers working at the intersection of art and technology. Gefährliche Arbeit connects people with jobs, disseminates know-ledge, shares materials, collectively searches for solutions, and learns with and from each other.

Olivia Jack is a programmer and artist who works with open-source software, cartography, live coding, and experimental interfaces. She is the developer of browser-based artistic tools such as Hydra (live co-ding video synthesizer), PIXELSYNTH, and LiveLab (peer-to-peer media router). Her audiovisual live sets explore algorithmic representations of unpredictable and chaotic systems and the writing of software as an ephemeral process.

Tool-Party #3 Live coding is performance, programming, and improvisation all at once: music, images, or movement are created in real time, controlled by code that is openly displayed. During the “Tool Party,” artist and creative coder Olivia Jack will explore with you how input devices such as MIDI controllers, webcams, and microphones can be combined with programming to enable new forms of live experience.

Tool-Party day 1
Participants will explore the open-source video synthesizer Hydra, which is used for live coding. They will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language in order to hack live camera feeds and create glitchy visuals in real time, as well as integrate microphone inputs and physical controllers into a running computer program. The workshop explores writing code as a performative practice.

Tool-Party day 2
On Sunday, participants will present their experiments at HAU3 Houseclub. The presentation will be complemented by a talk by Olivia Jacks about her artistic work. Afterwards, Gefährliche Arbeit invites you to live coding, nerd drinks, and an open exchange in a cozy atmosphere: What are the intersections between performance, technology, and community? How can we network to further develop our own projects?
